WHAT IS AN LMI?

A LMI (Lifting Machinery Inspector) is a person who is competent to conduct statutory examinations of lifting machinery, approved by a board of experts and registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a professional person under terms of the Engineering Profession Act, 2000 (Act No. 46 of 2000). ECSA will issue the LMI with a letter of “scope of competence” for the specified discipline (field of work). This letter also contains the LMI’s registration number. It is important that you as the customer ensure that the person conducting the statutory inspections as mentioned above is in possession of such a certificate and that his field of discipline includes all the equipment that he will be examining. A LMI is appointed by a LME and they cannot act on their own.

WHAT IS AN LME?

A LME (Lifting Machinery Entity) is a company registered with the Department of Labour (DOL) which is approved by the Chief Inspector himself to examine lifting machines and lifting tackle according to the Driven Machinery Regulation 18(5). It is very important that should any company approach you regarding the statutory 6 monthly and/or 12 monthly inspection & load testing of your lifting machines that they are in possession of a certificate issued by the Chief Inspector from the Department of Labour stating that they are registered as a Lifting Machinery Entity with their entity number (Ex. LME341).

NB: Only LME’s can issue load test certificates and only for the type of lifting machines listed in their “scope of approval”.
